All day at work Lizzy kept wondering where William would take her for dinner, what they would talk about, would it be awkward, what should she wear, did she really like him, was it disloyal to Jane to like him? Questions kept popping into her head. Somehow she finished the proposal to hire an editor and sent it to the accountant.

Ordinarily men didn’t learn where she lived for several dates. Sure, it was nice to be picked up at the beginning of the evening, then driven home, but she didn’t want to run the risk of the guy trying anything, or him knowing where she lived if he ended up being creepy. But when William asked if he could pick her up she gave him her address without a second thought. It wasn’t until she was driving home that she realised. Too late now.

If he’d wanted to he could have discovered a lot of highly personal information, including her sexual activity, if he were to glance in her production file. It was clear he had at least some knowledge from there. It felt a bit Big Brother and it probably should have bothered her more. Where had her principles gone? Thrown out the window for a cute boy she liked to argue with.

He arrived with flowers.

“I don’t think anyone has even given me flowers before,” she said, accepting them with pleasure. “Ah – come in while I put them in water.” She stepped back.

“Obviously you haven’t been treated right in the past…I…I mean…ah. Not all guys know how to treat a woman.”

Her back was to him so she didn’t have to hide her smile, though she checked her laugh.

“I’m sure you can show them how it’s done,” she said over her shoulder.

The flowers were yellow which made her wonder again if he’d looked at her file where it was listed under “favourite colour”. Though why her favourite colour was relevant to her dating life she wasn’t sure. She debated whether to say something. She’d never held back with him before so why start now?

“I love the colour, thank you,” she began – best not to accuse him outright.

“They reminded me of the dress you wore at the party. You looked so beautiful that night. I mean, you look beautiful now too. You always…look…beautiful.”

She filled the vase with water and managed to control the laughter that wanted to bubble out. She turned back to him, carrying the flowers. “It’s my favourite colour, thank you.”

“It suits you. Not that I know much, or anything, about that sort of thing. Gina is better at that than me. She was always good at art.”

“Come on,” she ushered him out of the kitchen ahead of her and put the vase on the wonky table in the lounge. He hovered awkwardly near the door and seemed relieved when she suggested they go. He opened the car door for her, something she’d only seen done in movies. She thanked him but didn’t make any further comment, to avoid making him stutter again.
